Preclinical Development

Raptor Pharmaceutical Inc. (Raptor Inc.), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Raptor Pharmaceuticals Corp., is the culmination of years of experience and research by a consortium of scientists, investors, and creative minds with one common goal, the development of novel protein therapeutics directed at unmet medical needs. Raptor Inc. was incorporated in the State of Delaware on September 8, 2005. On January 27, 2006, Raptor Inc. purchased intellectual property pertaining to the research and development of receptor-associated protein (RAP) technologies from BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. This portfolio encompasses three pending patent applications and two provisional patent applications. For further details on our patent portfolio, please see the section on Intellectual Property.
Raptor Inc. develops new therapeutics from engineered human proteins. Our approach is to capitalize on the evolved ability of particular proteins, called chaperones, to bind tissue-specific receptors. We have developed peptides from such chaperones that can be readily manufactured, retaining the binding behavior of the parent protein. These peptides can be conjugated to known drugs. The strong tissue-specific homing of the peptides allows efficient modification of the distribution of the drugs so that particular tissues are targeted with high selectivity. Raptor has applied this approach to the human receptor-associated protein (RAP) in order to develop therapeutics targeting liver disorders. Raptor Inc. has used the human mesoderm development protein (Mesd) to develop therapeutics targeting particular tumor types.
Raptor Inc.’s management and scientific advisors have many years of experience in the drug delivery and protein therapeutic development areas. Our Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Christopher M. Starr, was a co-founder, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. Our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Todd Zankel, was the Senior Director of Research at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. for eight years. Since its inception in 1997, BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. has developed and commercialized two enzyme replacement products based on the exploitation of receptor targeting to deliver therapeutic enzymes.
